A quadratic equation is any equation where the highest degree term (the term with the largest exponent) is a variable to the 2nd power.  These equations can always be written in the form:

ax^2+bx+c=0

where a, b and c are real numbers and a can not be zero. Of course a lot of the time a quadratic equation you come across may not look like this at all. The idea is that is can be simplified in some way to look like the equation above .
